ASML earnings drag semiconductor stocks lower
  + stars: | 2024-04-17 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Chip stocks fell on Wednesday after ASML, a key developer of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, said that bookings fell by 61% sequentially during the first quarter, a steeper drop than investors had expected. During trading on Wednesday, AMD's stock fell over 4%, Nvidia shares fell about 3%, Intel shares fell nearly 2% and Qualcomm was off 2%. But the biggest drop affected chip technology firm Arm , which was trading nearly 10% lower on Wednesday. ASML fell over 8% on a day when the entire S&P 500 index was only down less than 1%. ASML also said that it expected that government subsidies for chip factories, such as the CHIPS Act in the U.S., would boost its sales.

The Apple Vision Pro Is a Marvel. But Who Will Buy It?
  + stars: | 2024-01-31 | by ( Kevin Roose | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Last week, I was ushered by an Apple employee through a security gate, past a manicured lawn, down a flight of stairs and into a tastefully decorated faux living room inside the Steve Jobs Theater to get a preview of the company’s new Vision Pro headset. Like other reporters who were given early tours of the Vision Pro, my demo was far from exhaustive. Given how limited my trial was, I can’t in good conscience tell you whether the Vision Pro is worth the $3,500 — yes, three thousand five hundred United States dollars — it costs. I also can’t say if the Vision Pro solves what I call the “six-month problem.” With many V.R. headsets I’ve tried — and I’ve tried a lot — the initial novelty fades, and minor annoyances, like blurry graphics or a lack of compelling apps, start to pile up.

Dutch curb chip equipment exports, drawing Chinese ire
  + stars: | 2023-06-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
"We have taken this step in the interest of our national security" said Dutch Trade Minister Liesje Schreinemacher, adding such equipment may have military applications. Schreinemacher said a "very limited" number of companies and product models would be affected, and China was not named. But the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands described the move as an "abuse of export control measures" that violate trade rules. ASM International, which makes atomic layer deposition tools, said it did not expect a material change to its forecasts as a result of the Dutch rules, which also discuss that technology. The new Dutch list may later be adopted by other European countries or added to the EU list, though few European firms export high-end chipmaking equipment.

US threat gives ASML new headache on China exports
  + stars: | 2023-06-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BRUSSELS, June 30 (Reuters Breakingviews) - ASML (ASML.AS) now has to look to Washington, not its home government in The Hague, to determine which of its top-class chip-making machines it can still sell to Chinese companies. The Dutch government on Friday moved to restrict sales by the $294 billion semiconductor giant of EUV and certain types of its DUV lithography machines. That gives Biden reach over not only Dutch firms but also suppliers like Germany’s Trumpf and Zeiss, which make lasers and lenses respectively. ASML said Friday's Dutch announcement won’t have a material impact on its bottom line. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.

The size of subsidies under the EU Chips Act, which aims to tempt the world's top chipmakers to build factories in the bloc and double its share of global output to 20% by 2030, lags the $52 billion CHIPS for America Act. Taiwan accounts for more than 60% of global chip production and concerns are growing about heightened tensions between Taipei and Beijing. But Europe's relatively modest subsidies could put a brake on its ambition, said Richard Windsor of research company Radio Free Mobile. GOOD STARTThe EU Chips Act is a good start given the EU has little choice but to join the subsidy race, but the bloc should play to its chipmaking strengths, said Christopher Cytera, research fellow at the Centre for European Policy Analysis. Catching up on the chips race is more than just building factories and the Chips Act acknowledges this with its focus on developing skilled labour for the future, said Anielle Guedes, senior research analyst at IDC Technologies.
Portfolio manager Emily Leveille shared 7 international stocks investors should consider buying now. After lagging behind their American counterparts for years, international equities may finally give US stocks a run for their money in 2023. Leveille is a portfolio manager who oversees the international growth strategy at Thornburg Investment Management, a firm with $41 billion in assets under management. As growth becomes more scarce during an economic slowdown, she believes that companies with resilient growth characteristics are best positioned to outperform. Another luxury brand Leveille owns is LVMH (LVMHF), which is known for its signature Louis Vuitton handbags.
The Williams Racing team has won nine World Constructors' Championships and seven World Drivers' Championships in Formula 1. He said all F1 teams faced the challenge of "how to spend the money wisely and be highly efficient." "We won't be as competitive as someone with a few years of experience in F1," Capito said. "It's also a good opportunity for the young drivers. Capito added that he was determined to keep morale high, which "has to come from the leader."
Sure, cRPO (current remaining performance obligation) was a little light and the fiscal fourth quarter revenue guide midpoint missed by a hair (some conservatism probably due to the uncertain macro environment). Companywide results Breaking down quarterly subscription and support revenue results by cloud: Sales cloud revenue increased 17% in constant currency to $1.7 billion. Service cloud revenue increased 16% in constant currency to $1.9 billion. Platform and other (including Slack, which Salesforce acquired on July 21, 2021) revenue increased 22% in constant currency to $1.5 billion. Guidance For their fiscal fourth quarter, Salesforce management sees revenues increasing 8% to 10% year over year to $7.93 billion to $8.03 billion.
Scantinel Photonics has raised $10 million in Series A funding from PhotonDelta. The German startup uses photonics chips to make autonomous driving more precise and safe. The startup says the game-changer is its use of photonics chips. These photonics chips are used to make LiDAR solutions and devices — which are integrated into AVs, and key in helping vehicles to sense objects and estimate distances on the road. Scantinel says it is pioneering a "new wave of LiDAR technology" that's more immune to interference and precise in its imaging, said managing director Dr. Michael Richter.
